Our History
United Charities Building
The United Charities Building, located at the corner of Fourth Avenue and 22nd Street, was the first in New York City to be equipped with electricity and was constructed and generously donated by John S. Kennedy. This seven-story, fireproof building, completed between 1891 and 1893 at a cost of over $700,000, was intended to house the Charity Organization Society, the Children's Aid Society, the Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor, and the New York City Mission and Tract Society. Kennedy's vision was that other city charities would also find a home here, thereby enhancing their efficiency and economy.
